The longer evenings are starting to creep back in and summer holidays are now a massive talking point.
Many of you may be planning to take your first family holiday. Therefore, the search frenzy for family-friendly resorts, beaches, waterparks, zoos, kids clubs, and lets not forget the close proximity to the airport begins.
All of a sudden you start making lists of what you need to buy and what you need to think about before you choose your destination.
At Murray & Spelman, we like to take the hassle and effort out of your day, so we compiled a few tips to prepare you for your holiday.
We have also provided a printable link to our family holiday checklist below.
You will need to consider the type of accommodation to stay in:
Long gone are the days where you could stay in shabby-chic hotels or budget B&B’s. When you decide to bring the toddlers with you on holiday it is definitely worth thinking about what your accommodation can offer you.
Hotels are not always ideal when you have a young baby, you may not have kitchen facilities at your disposal and some parents are also concerned about the noise that their baby might make if he/she starts to cry during the night. This may wake other hotel guests and all you want to do is relax on holiday without getting the evils from your neighbours. Therefore, it might be worth considering a holiday villa, cottage or cabin as they provide your own enclosed space with facilities that allow some privacy for both the adults and toddlers.
Put your money towards the important necessities:
When you go on a family holiday with young kids, it is likely that you will spend a lot of time at your accommodation in comparison to when you were on holidays with your partner or friends.
Realistically speaking, you and your family may head to the beach or have a short trip into town, but with young children, you will want to have a comfortable base with some decent amenities.
Check out whether there is a kids club, crazy golf or water slides etc. to keep the little ones entertained while you relax. Also, You’re not going to want to drive or get a taxi for hours to reach a tourist hotspot when you’ve got young kids. Therefore, simple activities such as a walk to the nearest town to buy treats or to the local play area is very important.
Think about safety:
Depending on the ages of your kids, you may need to think about their safety around the swimming pool or busy roads nearby. Make sure you use proper safety devices near water such as Arm floaties and always stay within arm’s reach of your child.
Location does matter:
We all dream about white sandy beaches and year round sunshine, but you can get that without having young kids on a long 12 hour flight that have layovers and time zone changes.
Short Haul destinations such as the Canary Islands, Southern Spain, and France can be just as good and you will be delighted once you get off that plane with a shorter journey.
Make transport simple:
Is your hotel or villa owner picking you up? Will you get a taxi at the airport?
You need to make this transfer process as smooth as possible because you will most likely be feeling tired and grumpy after all your travelling.
If you are using a travel agent, make sure you enquire about transport to and from your accommodation to get this sorted before you go.
Some kids or even parents require various dietary requirements, make sure you will be able to eat at your accommodation or at a location nearby to keep everyone’s tummy happy.
Sometimes it seems like the list is endless before you go on your holiday, but as long as you know what you will really need, it can make life a whole lot easier when travelling.
It is important to remember that despite the effort of lists etc. before you head away, you will have an AMAZING time with your kids. It’s definitely a cliché, but as everyone says…. parenthood will fly by and we’ll look back on our children’s first sandcastle and wonder where the time went….. so enjoy every minute of it!!!
