If you find yourself skipping workouts when it’s cold outside, you’re not the only one. There is nothing more satisfying than coming home to a nice cosy fire rather than an icy jog or walk on those cold winter evenings.

Here are just a few suggestions on how you can stay active in this cold snap:
1. Get the right gear:

When its cold, owning the right workout gear makes it a lot easier to get up and get active. Your first layer should be made of a thin, synthetic material like polypropylene. For extra warmth, add a fleece or warm jumper. You also might like to wear waterproof, breathable outerwear, this attire will get you ready for the low temperatures in no time. But bear in mind that you may need to alter this outfit depending on the intensity level of your exercise.

2. Use online exercise videos:

If your motivation is dwindling and you can’t make the gym, check online for exercise videos. There is an abundance of free exercise tutorials out there and majority of these workouts require minimal equipment from the comfort of your own home.

3. Take up a winter sport:

Set up or join a local Gaelic football, Hurling, or Camogie team. It is not important what sport you choose, however you should pick a sport that interests you and a gang of your friends or colleagues so that you will not get bored easily.

4. Go Shopping:

There’s no need to spend a lot of money when you go shopping, but it is a great way to browse and get in some exercise. If you think about it… shopping centres are heated, and filled with plenty of public restrooms, and benches for post-workout rest. So, get those FitBits ready for a whole lot of browsing.

5. Home Gym Equipment:

Where is the excuse if you have your own gym equipment?. Keep in mind that there’s no need to clutter your living room with bulky athletic equipment. Many companies now sell foldable, collapsible, and lightweight cardio, weight, and resistance machines so space is no longer an issue. If you have a tight budget, then you can simply stick with a set of free weights, a yoga mat, and resistance bands.

6. Exercise Buddy:

Are you a winter couch potato?? then you need an exercise buddy stat… Many studies show that working out with a friend can help with accountability, pushing ourselves harder, its more fun, and we apparently feel calmer when we exercise with our friends. Go forth and get your gym buddy my friends, it will make all the difference.

7. Exercise while watching TV:

Does anyone ever watch the adverts anymore?… Why not hold a 30-second plank during each break, or do squats, side leg lifts, calf raises, and sit-ups until the show returns. It could make all the difference when summer time arrives and you are looking for that bikini body.

8. Take the stairs:

Whenever you get the opportunity, always take the stairs. It is often said that taking the stairs is just as effective as walking on the treadmill and it can even burn more calories.
